Job Openings

From November 2008 to November 2009, recent statistics revealed that the unemployment rate in the U.S. climbed from 6.8% to 10.0%, despite the current administration’s predictions that it would peak at 8% in 2009. At the end of 2009 there were approximately 15.4 million unemployed, which had risen from 7.5 million unemployed when the recession began in December, 2007. In the third quarter of last year, 277,924 workers were laid off. In the past three months the economy has seen 135,000 job payroll losses per month. Unfortunately, many in our church and community give a face to these statistics. It is certainly a difficult time. These statistics are probably low and do not account for those who have given up job searches or are part-time.

While all who are able should seek meaningful employment (Proverbs 12:11; 13:11), there are many job openings in our church ministry, which do not provide paid salary, but offer many rewards. As we begin a semester of FAITH evangelism and discipleship, we should remember Proverbs 11:30-31: "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who is wise wins souls." I am urging you to apply to be a "soul-winner." No experience is necessary. No resume is required. Your only reference and prior experience is new birth through the Savior. We are urging you to discover the joy of Proverbs 11:18 "He who sows righteousness gets a true reward." You will be rewarded both in this life with joy and fulfillment as well as in eternity.

David Burton, our outstanding Florida Baptist Convention Director of Evangelism, will speak at our FAITH banquet on Sunday. I have never known a more zealous and consistent soul winner than David. Even if you are not sure about the seven week commitment this season, please attend with an open mind and heart. The true, biblical "stimulus package" is not only the Great Commission but also the leadership of the Spirit, the need of the community and the passion of your pastor and staff. Please say, "Here am I. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8)

May we join Baptists around the nation this weekend for a Day of Prayer for our churches, nation, and Convention. Pray for our Great Commission Resurgence Task Force which, on a national level, is seeking God’s direction for the future. The future of our missions enterprises is at stake. Jonathan Edwards wrote of how in our earnest, humble seeking of God "multitudes of God’s dear children are sending up their cries to the same common Father." Actually, being an intercessor may be the most needed kingdom job on the planet.
