News alerts of mass shootings in schools, churches, and even newspaper offices have become commonplace. Truly, “the days are evil,” but God is “our refuge and strength.” He calls us to wise preparation and courageous protection. We thank Him for the many years of His mercy upon our persons and property at FBC and FBA. The recent hurricane also reminded us of the certainty of storms and the uncertainty of their timing and force.
Mr. Ron Scammon has faithfully led our FBC Security and Safety team for a number of years. He honorably served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam with a number of classified operations, not only with courage, but also medical skills. He is proficient in firearms, vehicle maintenance, and even the drums! He has blessed our ministry by creating and implementing detailed protocol for appropriate responses, and also promoted community relations with police, firefighters, and medical personnel. I have trusted my life and that of my family and church to this hard-working servant of the Lord. God is moving Ron and Susie forward to a new stage of life, but before leaving, Ron has helped us transition to new Security and Safety leadership.
We have hired Mr. Timothy Durham to this position, most recently working as Executive Director of Corporate Business Operations of Collier County, vitally administrating for the County Manager in communications, customer relations, tourism, budget, financial services, and business development and services. Tim has managed numerous projects and been Chief Deputy Supervisor of Elections, Legal Assistant in the County Attorney’s office, drill instructor and deputy in the Collier County Sheriff’s office, and worked with juvenile offenders. Tim has a J.D. degree from Florida State and a B.S. from Rutgers.
As a winsome person of great people skills, Tim loves our church and the Lord. He also received the Bronze Star for service in Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as other service medals, including 78th Division Drill Sergeant of the Year. He had specialized training in military fitness, recruiting, repelling, and air assault. He oversaw extremely dangerous operations in Iraq, escorted convoys of prisoners, and earlier was a tank commander and head of scouts and recon.
Tim brings a love and aptitude for education to this position, having taught Criminal Justice, Business Law, and Political Science as a Department Chairperson and Associate Professor. Thank you, Ron, for all you have done, and bless you, Tim, for all you will accomplish!
